Carol Ann Brewer, an American breeder, started the spotted ginger kitten breed in 1985 with Keba, a spotted ginger kitten with a short tail and strong frame.

Carol Ann Brewer mated Keba with Maggie, resulting in a kitten named Pixie. Inspired by Pixie's untamed appearance and golden disposition, she started the Pixie Bob breed. After identifying males with similar traits, she named them Pixie Bob kittens, derived from the English word for lynx, bobcat.

Carol Ann Brewer created the first standard for the bobcat breed in 1989. However, TICA disapproved of hybridizations, so genetic testing was necessary to prove domestic origins. The Pixie-bob was approved in 1993 but not allowed to compete. In 1996, it was given new status and officially recognized as a separate breed in 1998. The cat breed, introduced in 1997, was not recognized by the French cat authority, LOOF, until 2002, and is still not accepted by several cat groups like FIFé and CFA.

Since 2003, the LOOF has documented only 223 short-haired and 110 medium-long-haired Pixie Bob kittens, making them an uncommon breed in France. In 2022, only 13 kittens with short hair and 7 with long fur were born, making them 0.02% of all purebred cats, unlike the 177,349 Maine Coons observed in the last 20 years.
